The UK points-based system is divided into 5 Tiers:
- Tier 1 Visas – For highly skilled migrants, entrepreneurs, investors, and graduate students.
- Tier 2 Visas – Mainly for skilled workers with a job offer from a UK organization.
- Tier 3 Visas – For lower skilled workers to fill temporary shortages in the labour market. (This is a closed Tier.)
- Tier 4 Visas – International students.
- Tier 5 Visas – For youth mobility and temporary workers.

If a cast or crew member is coming into the UK to work on a production and the production is UK based, that person will nearly always require a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS). Depending on their nationality and personal circumstances they may also require an entry clearance visa. A CoS is a virtual number that contains key information on the applicant and is issued by a licenced Sponsor.
A CoS can cover a 90 day period without the need for entry clearance if the applicant is a ‘non-visa national’. If the applicant is a visa national, has a complicated immigration history or is in the UK for more than 90 days they are required to also apply for a visa. N.B. a CoS does not guarantee entry into the UK. Entry clearance can only be granted by border force personnel if/when the applicant arrives in a UK (air)port, or an entry clearance officer if submitting a visa.
Upon the granting of a visa the applicant would receive their passport with a vignette in it valid for 30 days from their stated date of travel. They would then be required to pick up their BRP (biometrics residency permit) card from their allocated post office within 10 days of arriving in the UK.
The maximum period for which a Tier 5 visa can be granted is one year. There is an option to extend in country for a further year, depending on an individual applicant’s circumstances.
The process outlined above can take up to one month from biometric submission. There are various other services that can help applicants who are short of time CoSmopolitan PSL would discuss all options with the client to create a tailor made solution that fits both the production company’s and the applicant’s needs.
